Excerpt from Fathers and SonsThe appearance of a good book is always regarded in Russia as an event of importance; but no event in the literary history of Russia ever created such a stir as the publication of Turgenev's Fathers and Sons. It widened the gap already existing between the passing generation of idealists and romanticists and the rising generation of revolutionists and realists. Upon the author it brought down a veritable avalanche of indignation and of applause. The indignation came from his friends, the applause from his enemies. The author recoiled from both as from terrific blows. To be misunderstood by the men whose general outlook on life he shared, whose social ideas and aspirations he served wholeheartedly with all the force of his great talent, stung him to the quick. This hostile reception of the book into which his best energies had gone brought him to the verge of despair, and he never completely recovered. He withdrew to solitude, and for six years his pen remained practically idle. Curiously enough the publication of the masterpiece of Russia's most beloved and most artistic writer brought a crisis in his own life.To be a faithful chronicler of one's age, to record events, tendencies, ideas, forces in such a way as to give a vivid, lifelike portrait of society is sufficient to place an author in the highest rank of creative artists.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
